"Any idea when you're speaking to the band?" a message reads. "My request was to ask if I can be their fourth member."

However, there remains a key snag: The author likewise desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are not alone. Several high-profile admirers have openly begged for the honor.

It's clear a special quality is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their parents. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy hopefuls.

Like all the greatest bands, they're a tight-knit gang. Their visuals often show them walking in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such boundless exuberance you can't help but think, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a bass'," states Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "It is the ultimate honour. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire others to form a group."

"So all gets an invitation to be the fourth part of the family."

Grammy Milestone

The group have called into a break, where they're recovering after an major tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I follow the lists every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the nomination resonates with the band.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major achievement," adds Alana. "But we're just grateful for the women that came before us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The project came out of a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that odd liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The lyrics track endings and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to make an effort in shutting out the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Development of Sound

That newfound toughness required a new sound – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Collective Laughter

The trio's candor inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their personal misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Legacy

One can easily sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their position in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an global audience.

However the sister act will always be their number one priority.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was little," says Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
