RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts down to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "Including them were thousands of British troops on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
